Antonelli extends F1 lead after Russell's costly Canada DNF

A fierce intra-team duel at the Canadian Grand Prix ended when George Russell retired with a technical issue on lap 30. Kimi Antonelli moved clear in the standings, with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen completing the podium behind him. The updated table shows Antonelli 43 points ahead.

Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the Formula 1 drivers' championship after capitalising on teammate George Russell's dramatic retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes pair delivered a gripping early battle for the lead until lap 30, when a technical issue forced Russell to park his W17 trackside, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. The outcome increases Antonelli's advantage at the top of the standings to 43 points.

The opening phase featured an intense back-and-forth. After initially dropping behind, Russell struck back on lap six with a move down the back straight, prompting a heavy lock-up from Antonelli as both narrowly avoided contact under braking.

The fight remained relentless for several laps. Antonelli reclaimed the lead on lap 22 and began to edge clear as the stint progressed.

Momentum swung again a few laps later when Antonelli made a mistake at the final chicane, allowing Russell back through. The order then changed once more when Antonelli was instructed to hand a position back after gaining an advantage by running off-track.

The decisive twist arrived on lap 30 as Russell slowed suddenly with a technical problem and retired, ending what had been a standout intra-team duel. From there, the front of the race settled, and Antonelli controlled proceedings to the finish.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen secured the remaining podium places behind the Mercedes youngster, while the championship picture tilted decisively in Antonelli's favour.
