Antonelli wins 2026 Canadian GP as Russell retires from lead

Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix after Mercedes team-mate George Russell retired while leading. Lewis Hamilton finished second for Ferrari, with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull. Five drivers failed to finish and one did not start.

Kimi Antonelli claimed victory in the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix on May 24 after his Mercedes team-mate George Russell retired while leading. The late twist at the front opened the door for Antonelli to take the flag, capping a race that saw only 16 cars make the finish.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton took second place, 10.7s behind Antonelli, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completing the podium at 11.2s. Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, 44.1s back from the winner.

Isack Hadjar was fifth for Red Bull, the first of a group of one-lap-down finishers. He led home Franco Colapinto in sixth for Alpine, Liam Lawson seventh for Racing Bulls, Pierre Gasly eighth for Alpine, Carlos Sainz ninth for Williams and Ollie Bearman 10th for Haas — all classified one lap behind Antonelli.

Oscar Piastri finished 11th for McLaren, two laps down, followed by Audi duo Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto in 12th and 13th. Esteban Ocon was 14th for Haas, also two laps adrift. Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac) rounded out the finishers in 15th and 16th, both four laps down.

Five drivers failed to see the chequered flag: Sergio Perez (Cadillac), Lando Norris (McLaren), Russell (Mercedes), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Alex Albon (Williams). Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) did not start.

Russell’s retirement from the lead proved pivotal in deciding the front-running order, clearing the way for Antonelli to bank the win for Mercedes while Hamilton and Verstappen disputed the remaining podium places. Beyond the top four, every finisher was at least one lap down on the race winner.

The final order remains subject to routine post-race checks, with teams expected to provide further detail on the various retirements. Attention now turns to post-race analysis and updates from the paddock ahead of the next round.
