Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team has announced a significant restructuring of its leadership team in preparation for the sweeping changes coming to Formula 1 in 2026. The British racing outfit revealed that Andy Cowell will transition from his current role as CEO and Team Principal to become Chief Strategy Officer, while legendary designer Adrian Newey will take on the additional responsibility of Team Principal starting in 2026.
The strategic realignment comes as Formula 1 prepares for its most substantial regulatory shift in a generation, featuring new technical specifications and the addition of an eleventh team to the grid. The changes are specifically designed to maximize the individual strengths of both executives while ensuring optimal organizational efficiency during this critical transition period.
Andy Cowell, who has led the team for the past 14 months through significant structural changes, will now focus on optimizing technical partnerships in his new strategic role. His extensive experience with power units will be crucial as Aston Martin prepares to become a full works team under the new regulations.
"Having implemented much needed structural changes as we transition to a full works team and set the foundations for Adrian and the wider organisation, it is an appropriate time for me to take a different role as Chief Strategy Officer," Cowell said. "In this role, I will help to optimise the technical partnership between the Team, Honda, Aramco and Valvoline and to ensure the seamless integration of the Team's new PU, fuel and chassis."
Adrian Newey, who joined Aston Martin as Managing Technical Partner earlier this year, will expand his responsibilities to include guiding the entire technical team and trackside operations. The celebrated designer brings decades of championship-winning experience to the Team Principal position.
Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin F1, praised Cowell's leadership while expressing confidence in the new structure. "Andy Cowell has been a great leader this year. He's focussed on building a world-class team and getting them to work well together, as well as fostering a culture that puts the race car back at the heart of what we do," Stroll stated. "This leadership change is a mutual decision we have reached in the interest of the Team."
Stroll added: "I'm also pleased that Adrian Newey will step into the Team Principal role, which will enable him to make full use of his creative and technical expertise. Both these changes will ensure the Team is best placed to play to their collective strengths."
Newey expressed enthusiasm for his expanded role, noting the considerable challenges ahead. "Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our Team. I'm looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026, where we will face an entirely new position with Aston Martin now a works team combined with the considerable challenge faced by the new regulations," Newey explained.
The designer emphasized the importance of Cowell's new strategic position, adding: "Andy's new role, focusing on the integration of the new PU with our three key partners, will be pivotal in this journey."
Lawrence Stroll will continue to oversee the business functions of the team while the technical leadership undergoes this significant transition. The restructuring represents Aston Martin's comprehensive approach to tackling Formula 1's new era, where the team will operate as a full manufacturer with Honda power units beginning in 2026.
The coming months will reveal how this new leadership dynamic prepares Aston Martin for the unprecedented technical challenges of the 2026 season, marking the team's most ambitious campaign since its return to Formula 1 as a constructor.
