In a significant shift within Formula One, Mercedes has confirmed that Andrea Kimi Antonelli will step into the seat vacated by Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season. The news comes as part of Mercedes' strategy to embrace a new chapter, especially after Hamilton's decision to leave at the end of the current season to join Ferrari.

The announcement was made on the eve of the Italian Grand Prix, which holds personal significance for the young driver. "It is an amazing feeling to be announced as a Mercedes works driver alongside George for 2025," said Antonelli. The 18-year-old made his FP1 debut at Monza just a day before the announcement, showcasing his readiness for the leap to the top tier of motorsport.

Antonelli's rise through the ranks has been nothing short of impressive. After clinching the ADAC and Italian F4 titles in 2022, he won the Formula Regional European Championship in 2023, skipping F3 entirely to make a bold entry into Formula 2 with PREMA this season. "I am still learning a lot, but I feel ready for the opportunity. I will be focused on getting better and delivering the best possible results for the team," he stated.

Currently, Antonelli sits sixth in the F2 championship standings after securing two race victories, a strong foundation as he transitions to Formula One. His dual commitments, including test driving older-spec F1 machinery for Mercedes, reflect the team’s confidence in his abilities.

Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed enthusiasm regarding the new pairing of Antonelli and Russell. “Our 2025 driver line-up combines experience, talent, youth, and out-and-out raw speed,” Wolff said. Highlighting the importance of nurturing talent, he added, “It is also a testament to the strength of our junior programme and our belief in home-grown talent.”

Russell, who has been with Mercedes since 2017, is set to embark on his fourth season with the team. He mentioned, "I’m really excited to be partnering with Kimi for 2025. His record in junior formula has been formidable and his promotion is truly deserved." Russell sees his role as a mentor for Antonelli, similar to the support he received from Hamilton during his early career.

“George has proved that he is one of the very best drivers in the world,” Wolff praised, noting Russell's consistent performance and leadership skills within the team. Antonelli’s inclusion reinforces Mercedes' future planning as they prepare for life after Hamilton, who has dominated the sport with seven world championships.

Hamilton's departure marks the end of an era, one that will significantly impact the team's legacy. Despite this change, Mercedes remains dedicated to cultivating talent from their junior program, as evidenced by both Russell and Antonelli being graduates.

As Mercedes gears up for the upcoming seasons, the anticipation is building around Antonelli's potential and the dynamics he will bring to the team alongside Russell. Wolff is confident in Antonelli’s raw talent, stating, “We know it will be another big step up, but he has impressed us in his F1 testing this year and we will be supporting him every step of the way in the learning process.”

With a combination of rookie talent and seasoned experience, Mercedes aims to maintain its competitive edge in the highly dynamic world of Formula One. Both drivers are expected to collaborate and contribute significantly as they navigate the challenges ahead, setting the stage for what could be a promising future for the team at the top tier of motorsport.
