Norris leads McLaren 1-2 in Miami sprint after Verstappen-Hamilton duel

Reigning champion Lando Norris headed a McLaren 1-2 in the Miami F1 sprint, with Oscar Piastri second and Charles Leclerc third. Kimi Antonelli’s post-race penalty dropped him to sixth as Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton on the road to take fifth.

Reigning F1 champion Lando Norris delivered a commanding Miami Grand Prix sprint victory on Saturday, 2 May 2026, leading a McLaren 1-2 from teammate Oscar Piastri. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium after 19 laps.

Norris and Piastri broke clear early after Kimi Antonelli suffered a slow getaway, with Leclerc the only driver able to keep the papaya pair within sight. At the flag, Norris led Piastri by 3.766s, with Leclerc 6.251s adrift in third.

Behind the podium places, Antonelli and Mercedes teammate George Russell traded fourth place multiple times while battling a lack of pace relative to their rivals. Antonelli crossed the line in P4 but was handed a five-second penalty for repeated track-limits infringements after the chequered flag, demoting him to sixth. The sanction elevated Russell to fourth and promoted Max Verstappen to fifth.

Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton rekindled a familiar duel in the midfield, initially fighting over sixth. An off-track pass from Verstappen on Hamilton had to be ceded, but the Red Bull driver later completed the move and pulled away. Hamilton ended the sprint in seventh.

Pierre Gasly delivered a solitary run to eighth for Alpine, claiming the final sprint point. Isack Hadjar finished ninth for Red Bull, with Alpine’s Franco Colapinto rounding out the top ten.

Gabriel Bortoleto was 11th for Audi, followed by Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman for Haas. Carlos Sainz came home 14th for Williams ahead of Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin). Sergio Perez (Cadillac) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) finished 17th and 18th, with Alex Albon (Williams) 19th and Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac) 20th.

Nico Hulkenberg (Audi) and Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) did not start. With McLaren converting pace into a decisive 1-2 and penalties reshaping the order behind, teams will now pore over sprint data as the Miami weekend continues.
