Valtteri Bottas Returns to Mercedes as Reserve Driver for 2025

Valtteri Bottas is set to rejoin Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2025 Formula 1 season. This announcement comes after Bottas and Kick Sauber parted ways following the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Bottas previously spent five seasons with Mercedes, racing predominantly alongside Lewis Hamilton and capturing all ten of his career wins during his tenure.

As Bottas transitions back to Mercedes, he brings a wealth of experience and success. "Returning home to the Mercedes family as third driver for 2025 is what’s next and I couldn’t be more pleased," said Bottas. His career with Mercedes was characterized by numerous achievements, including winning the constructors' championship in all five seasons he partnered with Hamilton.

After his time at Mercedes, Bottas joined Sauber, which was known as Alfa Romeo at that time, for the 2022 season. However, his performance with the Swiss team has been mixed, ranging from a respectable 10th position finish in 2022 to failing to score points altogether in 2024. With Sauber deciding against renewing his contract for 2025, replacing him with Nico Hulkenberg and Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, Bottas began discussions with Mercedes about a reserve position to maintain his connection to F1.

In his new role, Bottas will attend most Grands Prix, supporting the team's primary drivers, George Russell and debutant Kimi Antonelli. "I want to thank Toto [Wolff, Mercedes team boss], the team at Brackley, and everyone at the three-pointed star for welcoming me back with open arms," Bottas expressed, demonstrating gratitude for the opportunity.

Bottas further emphasized his passion for racing, stating, "Despite the challenges of the past few years, I know that I’ve still got so much more to contribute to F1." Looking back on his journey, he mentioned, "Since I was a five-year-old kid growing up in Nastola, Finland, my focus has been on achieving success in the top tier of motorsport."

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff welcomed Bottas back with enthusiasm. "Welcome home, Valtteri! It’s great to have you back," he exclaimed. Wolff recognized Bottas's impactful contributions during his previous five years with the team, highlighting his numerous wins and role in securing championship titles.

Wolff added, "His impact and contribution in the five years he was with us previously as our race driver was immense. Along with scoring multiple Grands Prix wins, he played a vital role in five of our championship victories." The team principal also mentioned Bottas's positive demeanor, stating, "His dry sense of humour and personable nature made him a firm favourite with everyone at Brackley and Brixworth."

Looking ahead, the return of Bottas as a reserve driver could significantly bolster Mercedes's efforts, specifically in their quest to adapt and compete effectively alongside evolving competitors. With the knowledge and experiences he has gained over the years, Bottas aims to aid his teammates and contribute strategically to the team’s championship ambitions.

As Formula 1 gears up for the 2025 season with this notable shift, the dynamics within the Mercedes team will be closely observed. Bottas's presence might not only uplift the team's morale but could also prove essential as they strive to regain their dominance on the track.
