The Formula 1 world championship battle has been thrown into chaos following the disqualification of both McLaren drivers from the Las Vegas Grand Prix due to technical infringements.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were excluded from the results after post-race inspections revealed their cars had sustained significant plank wear beyond the legal limits set by the FIA technical regulations. Norris had originally finished second in the race while Piastri crossed the line in fourth position.
The dramatic ruling has fundamentally altered the championship landscape with just one race remaining in the 2025 season. Norris now holds a precarious two-point advantage over Red Bull's Max Verstappen, while Piastri remains within striking distance in third place.
"This changes everything for Qatar," said one team principal who requested anonymity. "What looked like a comfortable margin for Norris has evaporated overnight due to a technicality."
The updated standings show Norris with 423 points, Verstappen with 421, and Piastri with 410. The McLaren team maintains its constructors' championship lead with 833 points, well clear of Mercedes in second with 469 points.
Heading into the season finale at the Losail International Circuit, Norris must outscore both his rivals by two points to secure his first world championship. Any scenario where Verstappen wins while Norris finishes third or lower would hand the title to the Red Bull driver.
"The pressure just multiplied for everyone involved," noted a veteran F1 analyst. "McLaren went from controlling their destiny to facing must-perform circumstances because of a millimeter of wear."
The technical infringement relates to Article 3.5.9 of the FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations, which mandates strict limits on plank wear to prevent teams from running cars too low to the ground for aerodynamic advantage.
Team representatives from McLaren have indicated they will not appeal the decision, accepting the FIA's findings. "We respect the technical regulations and the stewards' decision," a McLaren spokesperson stated.
The championship will now be decided at the Qatar Grand Prix on November 30th, where three drivers remain mathematically in contention for the title in what promises to be one of the most dramatic season finales in recent memory.
