The 2020 Formula 1 season, shortened and reshaped by the global pandemic, saw Lewis Hamilton claim his seventh World Championship title to equal Michael Schumacher's all-time record.
Hamilton dominated the condensed 17-race calendar, winning 11 grands prix for Mercedes. His consistency throughout the season was remarkable, with the Briton rarely finishing outside the podium positions. The title was secured with several races remaining, underlining the extent of his and Mercedes' superiority.
Valtteri Bottas finished second in the championship as Hamilton's teammate, while Max Verstappen took third for Red Bull. Verstappen secured two victories during the season but was unable to consistently challenge the dominant Mercedes W11.
The season was notable for its logistical challenges, with the calendar featuring multiple races at the same circuits and strict biosecurity protocols throughout. The Austrian Grand Prix in July served as the season opener, months after the originally scheduled start in Australia was cancelled.
Racing Point caused controversy with their RP20, widely referred to as the "Pink Mercedes" due to its similarity to the championship-winning 2019 Mercedes W10. The team received a penalty but continued to score strong results, with Sergio Perez claiming his maiden victory at the Sakhir Grand Prix.
The season also marked the final year for several familiar faces in their existing roles, with significant driver market movements confirmed during the campaign.
