Aston Martin Could Release Stroll Early to Sign Leclerc

Charles Leclerc could become a target for Aston Martin if he decides to leave Ferrari, according to reports. The Italian outlet AutoMoto claims Aston Martin might release Lance Stroll early from his contract to make room for Leclerc. Leclerc recently emphasized that 2026 will be a crucial year for Ferrari's competitiveness.

Charles Leclerc's future at Ferrari has come under speculation following a challenging 2025 season where the team failed to produce a race-winning car. Despite driving the problematic SF-25, the Monegasque driver secured seven podium finishes and ended the season fifth in the championship, 86 points clear of his teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

According to a report from Italian news outlet AutoMoto, Leclerc's "first option" should he seek an exit from Maranello would be Aston Martin. It is believed Leclerc has a performance-related release clause in his contract that could be triggered at the end of the 2026 season.

Aston Martin's driver lineup could be in flux with Fernando Alonso's contract set to expire at the end of the year. While Lance Stroll is understood to have a multi-year deal, the report suggests the Canadian "could be released earlier" if Leclerc becomes "a legitimate option for the Silverstone-based team."

Leclerc has previously been linked with a move to Mercedes, with team principal Toto Wolff said to be a long-time admirer of his talent. However, the new information points to Aston Martin emerging as the most likely destination should he decide his future lies elsewhere.

The 28-year-old driver recently spoke about the importance of the upcoming season for Ferrari, with new technical regulations coming into force in 2026. Speaking after December's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Leclerc expressed both hope and urgency about Ferrari's prospects.

"I do, and next year will be a crucial year," Leclerc said when asked if he believes Ferrari can deliver a competitive car. "The whole team is hugely motivated for next year, because it’s such a big change, a huge opportunity to show what Ferrari is capable of. It’s now or never, so I really hope that we will start this new era on the right foot, because it’s important for the four years after."

He added a specific timeline for evaluating the team's progress under the new regulations: "By race six or seven, I think we’ll have a good idea of who are the teams that will be dominating for the four years after."

The 2026 season will serve as a critical evaluation period for both Leclerc and Ferrari, potentially determining whether the team can provide him with championship-contending machinery or if he will activate his reported release clause to seek opportunities elsewhere.
