Russell Wins Thrilling Chinese GP Sprint Over Leclerc and Hamilton

George Russell secured victory in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint, maintaining his perfect start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver held off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by just 0.674 seconds after a dramatic race featuring multiple lead changes and a late Safety Car. Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third place after an intense battle with his teammate throughout the 19-lap contest.

George Russell continued his dominant start to the 2026 Formula 1 season by claiming a hard-fought victory in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint on Saturday. The Mercedes driver finished just 0.674 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with teammate Lewis Hamilton completing the podium in third after an action-packed 19-lap race that featured multiple lead changes and a late Safety Car intervention.

Russell started from pole position but immediately faced pressure from Hamilton, who had surged from fourth on the grid. The seven-time world champion made an aggressive move at Turn 9 to take the lead, setting up an intense intra-team battle that would define the early stages of the race.

The two Mercedes drivers exchanged positions multiple times during the opening laps, with Russell ultimately making the decisive pass at the Turn 14 hairpin on Lap 5. From there, the 28-year-old began to build a gap while Leclerc worked his way past Hamilton to take up the chase.

The race took a dramatic turn when Nico Hulkenberg's stricken Audi required retrieval, bringing out the Safety Car in the closing stages. The leading drivers all made late pit stops under the caution, with Hamilton forced to stack behind Leclerc in the pits, costing him valuable track position.

When racing resumed, Russell managed the restart perfectly to maintain his lead while Leclerc applied constant pressure in the final laps. The Ferrari driver closed to within DRS range but couldn't find a way past the defending Mercedes.

Hamilton recovered to claim the final podium spot after dropping behind Lando Norris during the pit stop sequence. The McLaren driver finished fourth, with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli taking fifth despite serving a 10-second penalty for an opening lap collision with Isack Hadjar.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri finished sixth after being overtaken late by Antonelli, while Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Haas' Ollie Bearman claimed the final points after opting not to pit under the Safety Car. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Esteban Ocon (Haas) completed the top ten.

The result marks Russell's third consecutive Sprint victory this season, solidifying his position at the top of the championship standings. The performance also demonstrated Mercedes' continued strong form in 2026, with both cars finishing in the top five despite the intense competition from Ferrari and McLaren.

Attention now turns to Sunday's main Grand Prix, where Russell will look to convert his strong qualifying performance into a full victory. With Ferrari showing competitive pace and Hamilton eager to make amends after missing out on Sprint victory, the stage is set for another thrilling contest at the Shanghai International Circuit.
